Zid Dirpas is the name of a Rodian scientist roleplayed by Brodie Snavely in the Edge of the Empire campaign. The character was created specifically for roleplaying scenarios and is known for regularly being covered in bodily fluids, including vomit and brains.

Backstory

Zid was born on the Rodian home planet of Rodia in 37 BBY. When The Clone Wars began in 22 BBY and Rodia defected to the Separatists temporarily, Zid left the planet at the young age of 15 and became his father's copilot running Ryll spice for Teemo the Hutt. Encounters with local police forces quickly taught Zid mechanic basics. He became fascinated with the mechanical systems of ships and, after the war ended, went to the planet Absanz to work as an engineer for Sienar Fleet Systems. This stay with Sienar was not long-lasting, as Zid quickly became disillusioned with Sienar and their intentions with the TIE-series ships after their initial introductions in 18 BBY.

Returning to Rodia, Zid began independent research on starship mechanics, specifically fuel systems. In 15 BBY, Zid produced a synthetic fuel mixture mimicking the fuel found on Peragus until 3951 BBY. During initial testing, the HH-87 Starhopper running on this synthetic fuel mixture crashed in the Rodian swamp, killing the hired test pilot. Following this, Zid could not find willing test pilots for his experiments on Rodia. Zid used what little piloting skills he gained working on his father's spice freighter to test his experiments himself. Zid became a natural pilot, not because he enjoyed it, but because it was necessary for testing his experiments.

By 13 BBY, Zid was known among locals for being one of the smartest known Rodians. He successfully used an old Czerka Corporation engine to set a new galactic land speed record in an RGC-18 landspeeder, narrowly avoiding death multiple times while conducting the tests.

In 9 BBY, Zid had gained a significant reputation in the Savareen sector. Word traveled back to Teemo the Hutt on Tatooine, who sent bounty hunters after Zid to arrange a meeting. Teemo told Zid he would fully fund a very ambitious project: a cloaking device for his Ryll freighters. The project had not made any significant headway as of 5 BBY, much to the displeasure of Teemo, who began to grow angry with Zid.

Coaxium accident and lab raid

During the design phase of the cloaking device for Teemo, Zid needed to test hyperfuel's reaction to the fledgling cloak technology. On board a C-ROC Gozanti-class cruiser provided by Teemo in orbit over Rodia, Zid, accompanied by his mother Zmoti Dirpas, received a shipment of raw coaxium. Due to a major shipping error, the raw coaxium quickly became unstable. Zid reached an escape pod and launched, but Zmoti's pod was damaged on launch. The pod was too close to the ship when the coaxium detonated, and both Zmoti and Teemo's ship were lost.

Harloth, Zid's father, was totally enraged over the loss of his wife. Some weeks later, bounty hunters for Teemo returned to Zid's laboratory and destroyed everything that Zid had worked for years to create. Zid escaped with only his datapad and went into hiding.

After some time, Zid took a transport to Tatooine, the location of Teemo's palace, to confront Teemo about his wrongdoings. As the campaign begins, Zid is found in the Mos Shuuta Cantina, contemplating how to go about doing this.

Trivia

  • The name Zid Dirpas originates from a "Star Wars Random name generator."
  • Zid does not usually find himself in combat situations prior to Edge of the Empire but opts to carry a slugthrower pistol when traveling to dangerous locales.
  • Zid always carries a chance cube and a protected datapad with schematics for all of his engineering projects and various data collected on his travels, including data on TIE-series ships collected during his time at Sienar.
